Saint Agatha at the Village

I am born from fire, even though men only remember the stone.

Before I had a name, I was a breath of the earth. The mountain, turning in its sleep, let a tongue of lava flow that stopped here and cooled, becoming a dark and silent expanse. For a long time, I remained so: lava and silence.

Then came the men. They did not come by choice, but because something had pushed them away: from Misterbianco, from Malpasso, from towns that the lava had erased. Here they found only space, and space for those who have lost everything is already a promise.

They built low houses on the black stone, as if asking the lava for permission to stay. Thus the Village was born. But every village needs a heart, and they decided that heart would be me.

They built me with the same stone they walked on. I kept their voices: prayers, memories, names of lost places.

Then the earth trembled. My walls cracked, but the men returned and rebuilt me. Each time, I changed a little, because even a church, like a city, lives from the lives that pass through it.

Now, the Village grows around me and many have forgotten where they came from. I have not.

I remember the lava before the houses and the path of the men before the roads. For this I know that I was not born only from the fire of the mountain, but from the desire of men to stop, after being forced to leave.
