Saint Joseph in Giarratana, great anticipation for the external feast

In Giarratana, the celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph, led by parish priest Don Francesco Ottone and vicar Don Johns Avuppadan, are currently experiencing their most intense phase. This is one of the most beloved occasions for the community, rooted in tradition and popular devotion. The cult of the Patriarch, deeply present in the area, attracts faithful, families, and devotees every year, who experience these days as a strong sign of identity and belonging.

Tomorrow, the eve of the external feast, anticipation will grow even further: at 5 PM, the firing of cannon shots and the festive sound of the bells will announce the imminence of the great day. In the afternoon, the Rosary and the litanies will introduce the 6 PM Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Don Mario Modica, followed by the traditional blessing of the “Altars” of Saint Joseph set up by families, among the most characteristic and participatory gestures of the entire celebration.

The Sunday dedicated to the external feast constitutes the heart of the program. It opens with the 8:30 AM Mass, celebrated by Don Johns, and with the parade of the “Vincenzo Bellini” band through the streets of the town, while bells and cannon shots officially mark the solemn day. In the square, at 10 AM, symphonic marches will resonate, a prelude to the 11 AM celebration presided over by parish priest Don Ottone.

At noon, one of the most anticipated moments is expected: the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph, accompanied by a fireworks display and the first procession that will traverse the historic center.

In the afternoon, after another performance by the band at 4 PM, at 4:30 PM the traditional “dinner” on the steps of the Mother Church will take place. At 7 PM, the Thanksgiving Mass with the entrustment of the city to Saint Joseph. At 8 PM, the statue will begin the return procession, welcomed in the evening at the Mother Church amidst the festive sound of the bells, the cannon shots, and a final fireworks display.

The increasing participation and the intensity of the rituals confirm, once again, the centrality of Saint Joseph for Giarratana: a spiritual, cultural, and identity reference capable of uniting generations and families around a living and deeply shared tradition.
