Ragusa, the living Stations of the Cross return: gathering in Chiaramonte Square in Ibla
The event promoted by the Mother Church of San Giorgio is scheduled for Sunday, March 22.
A moment from the living Stations of the Cross from the last edition
Ragusa is preparing for one of the most intense and participated moments of the Lenten tradition: the Living Stations of the Cross, scheduled for Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 8:30 PM, starting from the Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata, in Piazza Chiaramonte, in the heart of Ibla.
After the great success of its debut last year, the initiative returns with an even broader scope thanks to the involvement of associations, parishes, and partners from outside Sicily.
Promoted by the youth of the San Giorgio parish who wanted to involve others from the parishes of San Tommaso Apostolo and Anime Sante del Purgatorio, as well as from other parishes in the city, the reenactment will transform the streets of the ancient village into a large open-air stage, where the Passion of Christ will take shape through a well-curated, intense, and deeply shared staging.
The 2025 edition had already captured the attention of visitors and observers even beyond regional borders, thanks to its scenic quality, meticulous attention to costumes, and the emotional strength of the performances.
This year, the proposal grows further thanks to the support of national and international partners who have chosen to stand by the initiative, recognizing its cultural and spiritual value.
Alongside them, numerous local entities – business owners, artisans, cultural associations – have contributed to the realization of the project, confirming its collective character and rootedness in the community.
The representation, which will involve dozens of performers, technicians, and volunteers, will traverse the historic streets of Ibla in a journey capable of uniting visual suggestion and inner meditation.
Scenographies, costumes, lights, and a shared direction among the involved associations promise a high-impact experience, able to speak to both believers and non-believers.
The Living Stations of the Cross on March 22 thus confirms itself as a significant event of great cultural and spiritual value, uniting tradition, art, and community and establishing itself as one of the most meaningful moments of preparation for Easter in Ragusa.
