Modica, schools remain open and the mayor faces a series of insults.
It was the same mayor who made it known that she had received the insults in question.
Mayor Maria Monisteri Caschetto
The mayor of Modica Maria Monisteri Caschetto has chosen to make public an episode that, according to her, has been repeating for some time: after the decision to keep the schools open despite the orange weather alert, her Instagram profile has been the target of aggressive and intimidating messages.

This time, however, the first citizen has decided to not let it go. She showed some of the comments received – blurring the names of the authors – and announced her intention to report to the competent authorities. It would not be an isolated case: every time there is a discussion about possible school closures, her social media channels fill up with insults.
The mayor expressed particular bitterness about the age of the senders, whom she considers to be very young. As a Modican, she said, it hurts her to read certain words directed at someone who represents the city.
Alongside the hostile messages, there have also been others, lighter and more respectful, especially from students who commented on the administrative choice with irony but without crossing the line of respect. A sign that, according to the mayor, demonstrates how civil discourse is possible.
She also reminded that school closures are not automatic: they are ordered only when there are conditions of real danger to safety.
Similar situations have occurred elsewhere. In Ragusa, in recent months, Mayor Peppe Cassì had reported pressures and insults received on social media in similar circumstances, always related to decisions about bad weather.
Incidents like this bring to the forefront a broader issue: the digital education of new generations. Social media, often perceived as spaces without consequences, can turn into places of verbal aggression. Hence the call to promote a culture of dialogue, respect, and responsibility, especially among the younger generation.
