Sigonella and other sensitive sites, increased vigilance. Police circular: 'Possible anti-militarist demonstrations'
A letter sent to the prefects urges to strengthen control measures for 'the increased exposure to the terrorist threat and the diversified expressions of dissent'
A "strengthening of surveillance devices" on American military bases in Italy, "as well as at sensitive sites related to the military production supply chain, especially that supporting the military logistics chain of allies," is contained in a Circular - seen by Ansa - sent by the Department of Public Security to prefects and police chiefs. The escalation of the crisis in the Middle East is the indication, "could trigger a resurgence of the antagonistic campaign in support of the Palestinian cause or in any case in an anti-militarist direction with possible protests at those sites.
"Scrupulous attention" to airports and train stations and, at the ports, "the presence of military and commercial naval assets related to sensitive countries (USA and Israel) must be closely monitored, as well as that of large cruise ships on major tourist routes." This is another of the indications contained in the circular.
Prefects are invited to implement security measures "to protect diplomatic-consular, religious, cultural, economic, and commercial objectives related to the State of Israel and the Jewish religious community, as well as to the USA." "The increased exposure to the terrorist threat and the diverse expressions of dissent - indicates the Circular - also impose the need for a strengthening of the protection of "institutional and government objectives, party and political movement offices, critical infrastructure, and the production and delivery of essential public services, locations that, due to their tourist vocation, religious significance, or because they are involved in media-relevant events, see a greater influx of people and worshippers."
It is also requested that the postal police monitor the web "for the timely identification of any hostile actions or mobilizations for the prompt planning of devices to protect public order." Police operators and military personnel participating in the Safe Roads operation are finally encouraged in their operations to maintain "a high level of attention, adopting appropriate measures to safeguard their own and others' safety."
