Intermodality in Catania
Stazione Fontanarossa and the nearest airport with an elevated pedestrian walkway: the Region says yes
It will be equipped with a moving walkway and will connect the train station to the terminals of Vincenzo Bellini airport
An elevated pedestrian walkway of about 780 meters, equipped with moving walkways in both directions, to connect the Fontanarossa railway station to the terminals of Catania's Vincenzo Bellini Airport. The regional government has approved this solution, deemed the best during the technical meeting convened last October by the Department of Infrastructure and Mobility, which will ensure intermodal integration between rail and air transport, direct, functional, and safe for passengers. The approval of the council is a necessary step to proceed with the drafting of the Technical-Economic Feasibility Project (Pfte), which precedes the start of the authorization process and the subsequent programming of the intervention.
"The establishment of a stable connection between the station and the Catania airport terminal - says the President of the Region, Renato Schifani - is a strategic objective in the context of enhancing regional mobility infrastructure, which will ensure high standards of accessibility and safety for Sicilian passengers and the many tourists who use the Etna airport every year. A solution that will allow us to have a more modern service in line with international standards."
"We are moving forward with the modernization of our Island's infrastructure - adds Regional Mobility Councillor Alessandro Aricò - bridging a decades-long gap in Sicily, with the implementation of cutting-edge projects."
Furthermore, as part of the works on the railway doubling of the Messina-Catania line, the regional council today decided to accept the request of the mayors of the municipalities affected by the works (Furci Siculo, Itala, Letojanni, Nizza di Sicilia, Roccalumera, Sant'Alessio Siculo, Santa Teresa di Riva, Savoca, Scaletta Zanclea, and Taormina) and, therefore, to not modify the original project which includes the Letojanni interconnection and the maintenance of the current Letojanni-Alcantara line.
