Crushed by the debris of an excavator: death at work in Germany for a worker from Gela
The incident in Potsdam. The victim was 25 years old and lived in Nisseno although his family had moved years ago
Tragic workplace accident in Potsdam, Germany. The victim Marco Catania, 25 years old, originally from Gela. The young worker lost his life at a construction site in the German city, in the Bornstedt neighborhood, at the intersection of Pappelallee and Reiherweg. According to initial reports released by local authorities - and reported by the German newspaper Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung (MAZ) - an excavator in operation suddenly overturned. The heavy load being transported by the vehicle fell into the excavation below, burying the Sicilian worker. Rescue teams and police arrived shortly before noon, but every attempt at resuscitation was in vain: the twenty-five-year-old died on the spot due to the severe injuries sustained.
In the same incident, three other workers were injured, but their conditions do not raise particular concern. The story of Marco Catania is marked by a strong connection to his homeland: although his family had already established residency in Germany, he had chosen to live in Gela, facing frequent trips for work. According to information provided by the authorities in Potsdam, he was employed by a supplier company commissioned by the Municipal Real Estate Service (KIS) to carry out work at the construction site. The Western Brandenburg Police Directorate immediately secured the area and launched a formal investigation. The causes of the excavator's overturning and any potential safety responsibilities remain to be clarified. The “white death” of Marco Catania casts despair over his relatives in Germany and the entire community of Gela, deeply affected by the loss of one of its young citizens.
