Women victims of violence and the appeal for peace in the Pope's Angelus: a call for equal dignity of women and solidarity
The Pope's invitation to serve, like Jesus, with listening and reconciliation
"Today, March 8, marks the International Women's Day." This was recalled by the Pope during the Angelus, asking to renew the commitment that for us Christians is based on the Gospel for the recognition of the equal dignity of men and women. Unfortunately - added Pope Leo - many women from childhood are still discriminated against and suffer various forms of violence. To them, especially, goes my solidarity and my prayer.
"From Iran and all over the Middle East, news continues to emerge that causes deep dismay: in addition to episodes of violence and devastation and the widespread climate of hatred and fear, there is the fear that the conflict will widen and other countries in the region, including dear Lebanon, may once again plunge into instability." The Pope renewed his appeal during the Angelus: "may the roar of bombs cease, may the weapons be silenced, and may a space for dialogue be opened where the voice of the people can be heard". He then prayed for those who suffer because of the war and that hearts may walk along paths of reconciliation and hope.
Jesus is attentive and listens to the Samaritan woman, the protagonist of today's Gospel, "without ulterior motives and without disdain". This was said by the Pope during the Angelus, adding: "How many people seek this same tenderness, this availability in the Church!" And how beautiful it is when we lose track of time to give attention to those we meet, just as they are. Today we ask to be able to serve, with Jesus and like Jesus, humanity thirsty for truth and justice. It is not the time for confrontations between one temple and another, between 'us' and 'them': the worshipers that God seeks are men and women of peace, who worship Him in Spirit and truth, concluded Pope Leo.
