Pantelleria isolated: transport in turmoil, the Uil calls for territorial continuity
The trade union organization urges a quick and decisive intervention from regional and national authorities
"What is happening in Pantelleria is not just a simple inconvenience, but a true social and economic emergency. It is intolerable that, in 2026, a community is held hostage by structural fragilities that reoccur cyclically. When the transport system collapses at the first technical failure, it means that the planning is a failure. Territorial continuity is not a favor, it is a constitutional right".
This is denounced by the general secretary of Uil Trapani, Tommaso Macaddino, and the Uil Pantelleria representative, Giorgio Paxia.
"The recent technical halt of two aircraft, which adds to the chronic issues of maritime transport, has essentially isolated Pantelleria, paralyzing the right to health, work, and free movement of the residents of Pantelleria. The current blockade – add Macaddino and Paxia – is causing serious damage, as reported by the municipal administration of the Island: patients unable to reach hospitals on the mainland, local businesses on the brink of collapse, and a tourism system that pays the price of an image of unreliability".
The Uil of Trapani urges a quick and decisive intervention from regional and national authorities: "No more promises are needed, but structural solutions: certain substitute means, an adequate and constant naval fleet on the Trapani-Pantelleria route, and an emergency plan that does not leave the municipality isolated at the first gust of wind or the first technical failure".
