Sinner in the Quarterfinals of Indian Wells: quick work against Fonseca in two sets
The blue team has appeared in form. They will face the twenty-year-old American Learner Tien.
Jannik Sinner has qualified for the quarter-finals of Indian Wells. The Italian tennis player defeated the Brazilian Joao Fonseca in the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in the United States, winning in two sets with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (4) in two hours and three minutes of play.
In the next round, he will face the American Learner Tien, who won in three sets against the Spaniard Davidovich Fokina.
The match started evenly, with Fonseca particularly effective on serve and lethal with his forehand when coming forward, but less solid in defense. Sinner was unable to create opportunities to break serve, and the set was decided in the tie-break: here the Italian saved three set points before closing it out 7-6.
In the second set, the world number two raised his level, breaking in the sixth game; called to serve for the match at 5-3, he was broken back, delaying the verdict to the deciding game, which was once again won by the Italian.
In the quarter-finals, Jannik Sinner will face the twenty-year-old American Learner Tien, who is making his first appearance in the top eight of a Masters 1000.
The American had already been defeated by the Italian with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the ATP 500 in Beijing last October.
“I think this is the first of many 1000 quarter-finals for him. Learner is very consistent. He and Joao are the future of our sport. I’m happy to face him again. He has improved a lot since the last time. I’m happy to find myself in the position to play a quarter-final in a big tournament again, these are already very special days. Of course, we hope for a great match,” Sinner commented.
