Region, the opposition stands firm after the Iacolino case: "Schifani should resign," mobilization against the regional government is ready.

All opposition parliamentary groups united to demand the resignation of Schifani, with the promise of a mobilization throughout Sicily if this does not happen. This is what emerged from the joint press conference of Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, Controcorrente, Green Left Alliance, Italia Viva, Civic Project Italy, Civic Space, Psi, +Europa, and Più Uno, who commented at Palazzo dei Normanni on the judicial affair of Salvatore Iacolino, former general director of the Policlinico di Messina and former director of the strategic planning department of the Health Department.

For the opposition, the fact that Iacolino has been removed from his position is "yet another scandal" that should push Renato Schifani to "pull the plug" on the regional government.

"Iacolino - says Anthony Barbagallo, regional secretary of the Pd - was not an ordinary person but Schifani's strong man in managing power: yesterday's investigation is the point of no return for the disaster of Sicilian healthcare".

For the vice president of Ars and regional coordinator of the M5s Nuccio Di Paola, the Iacolino affair "is a film we've seen before: Sicily is now used to these scandals, which have been recurring for years with different subjects. The political forces present here are taking on a huge responsibility towards the Sicilians: we have worked to unite this alternative and I hope it remains so in the coming months; we cannot limit ourselves to criticizing what is wrong, but we must build. It is unacceptable for Schifani to focus on secret voting rather than on the scandals and investigations that are devastating the regional majority: healthcare must be freed from this stench of bad politics".

During the press conference, the leader of Controcorrente Ismaele La Vardera spoke of "a fish that smells from the head: Schifani does not know what is happening in Sicily, the regional administration is out of control: every time the president calls the council to send the directly interested party home without understanding that the problem is himself". La Vardera then added that "the eviction of Schifani is being done by his own majority: we know that Meloni would have decided to bring the vote forward to September of this year with the candidacy of Musumeci".

"What happened is of extreme gravity - says Fabio Giambrone, regional spokesperson for Europa Verde - Schifani is the political responsible for this matter, we are ready to promote a mass mobilization in which we will be united: within the regional government there is a very strong moral issue, we strongly demand the resignation of Schifani".

On the same point insists the regional leader of Italia Viva Fabrizio Micari, who states that "in no civilized country can a government remain in power where majority representatives are under investigation, arrested, or on trial: this time, however, the situation is more serious, because it concerns Schifani's right-hand man and a person whom he defended until the end. We must react at the highest level and present a united and strong alternative".

Pierpaolo Montalto, regional secretary of Sinistra italiana, says that "the charge of external complicity in mafia association for Iacolino means that we have gone beyond. These people are destroying the Sicilian public health system to benefit those who profit and speculate".

Nino Oddo, national deputy secretary of the Psi, recalls the scandal of the reports from Trapani, which erupted about a year ago: "It was a mistake to leave Iacolino in his position after that incident - he says - he was just a pawn but the entire chessboard should have been cleared. We know they won't leave, so we ask the Sicilian people to say enough".
