Third mandate for mayors rejected: secret vote and turncoats sink the rule in Sicily
It happened for the second time and concerns municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants
For the second time in a few weeks, the Sicilian Parliament has rejected the provision that allowed for a third term for mayors in municipalities with up to 15 thousand inhabitants. And once again, it was the secret vote requested by the opposition that shattered the center-right majority. With 43 votes in favor and 18 against, the Assembly approved a supplementary amendment to the text, with about twenty rogue votes.
Rejected for the first time in mid-February, the provision had been reintroduced after the recent ruling by the Constitutional Court, in an attempt to align Sicily with the rest of the country and to apply it in the upcoming spring local elections.
