"Amid the heavy gunfire this evening, three peacekeepers were injured inside their base in Al Qawzah, in southwestern Lebanon. The most seriously injured has been transferred to a hospital in Beirut for necessary treatment. The other two are being treated at a Unifil medical facility. A fire at the base has been extinguished".

Unifil reports this in a statement, emphasizing that the UN force "will investigate the circumstances of this terrible event".

"It is unacceptable that peacekeepers engaged in tasks assigned by the Security Council are targeted. We firmly remind all parties involved of their obligations under international law to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property at all times", the statement continues. "Any attack on Unifil peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701 and may constitute a war crime".
