"This morning, the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait, which hosts U.S. and Italian personnel and capabilities, was the target of a drone attack that hit a shelter, inside which a remotely piloted aircraft of the Italian Task Force Air was housed, which was destroyed.
I immediately contacted Colonel Mangini to check on the condition of the Italian personnel present at the base.
At the time of the attack, all personnel were safe and were not involved. I promptly informed Defense Minister Crosetto about the incident, with whom I am in constant contact for the continuous update on the situation of all our contingents abroad."
"Thus stated the Chief of Defense Staff, General Luciano Portolano, in a statement published on X by the Defense General Staff.
"The Italian Task Force Air had been preemptively reduced in the past days, as part of the measures adopted in relation to the evolving security situation in the area. The personnel remaining at the base are engaged in carrying out the essential activities of the mission. The aircraft that was hit was an indispensable asset for carrying out operational activities and had remained deployed at the base to ensure the continuity of operations. The situation is constantly monitored by the Chief of Defense Staff and the Joint Operational Command (COVI), which maintain a continuous contact with the contingents on the ground," concluded Portolano.
"We will not be intimidated; Italian missions continue." This was stated by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Tg4 Diario della domenica while commenting on the drone attack on the U.S. base in Kuwait, where Italian soldiers are also stationed.
"We are reducing personnel" at the Italian bases in the region, "we must secure as many men as possible while honoring international commitments", Tajani added, recalling that the base in question had already been attacked.
