Ragusa, with the car inside the level crossing: it happened on via Paestum
The intervention of the firefighters and local police was necessary to secure the vehicle and the driver.
The car at the level crossing on Paestum Street
Everything happened in a few minutes today at the level crossing on Via Paestum in Ragusa. An incident that, fortunately, left no injuries or damage behind, but created a moment of concern among those nearby. A car got stuck inside the railway area, just as the barriers were coming down. One of those situations where the margin between normalcy and risk suddenly narrows.
The driver, realizing he could no longer exit, had the presence of mind to position the vehicle parallel to the tracks, an instinctive yet intelligent maneuver: if a train had come, the impact would have been less violent. Fortunately for him – and everyone else – no train was passing at that moment. The scene remained suspended in silence until the firefighters and local police arrived, secured the area, and took care of removing the car.
Unfortunately, similar incidents are not rare. The level crossing remains one of the most delicate points in the coexistence of road and rail, so much so that in recent years RFI has accelerated the gradual elimination of many crossings, replacing them with underpasses or overpasses. But where level crossings remain, caution is everything: obey the signals, never force passage, do not trust appearances. Because it only takes a moment to turn an unexpected event into a tragedy.
In Ragusa today, it went well. The car was removed, traffic returned to normal, and the driver got away with just a big scare.
