Escapes from house arrest to attempt a burglary in an apartment: 36-year-old arrested

The State Police arrested a 36-year-old man from Catania who, in recent days, violated the obligations imposed by the house arrest measure to attempt a burglary.

The alarm went off in the dead of night when the owner, startled awake by persistent noises coming from the front door, realized the attempted break-in and called for help from the Operations Room of the Catania Police Headquarters, which promptly dispatched a patrol from the General Prevention and Public Rescue Office.

The 36-year-old was trying to force the lock with a carpenter's lever. The action lasted several minutes.

While waiting for the officers to arrive, the owner found the courage to open the door, surprising the man in the act; he ran away towards the landing. However, upon exiting the front door, he was stopped by the police from the Flying Squad, who had meanwhile arrived at the residence in the area of Via Ventimiglia.

The man from Catania was arrested in the act for escape and attempted aggravated burglary, while the presumption of innocence of the accused remains valid now and until a final judgment.

By order of the on-duty prosecutor, he was taken to the security rooms of the Police Headquarters awaiting summary judgment.

The officers recognized him immediately as he had recently been responsible for a series of property crimes, for which the judicial authority had imposed the preventive measure of house arrest against him.

Despite this, he would have left his home, escaping, to return to stealing.

In the subsequent search conducted at his home, the police found a computer and some new appliances, placed in the kitchen and still packaged, presumably the proceeds of previous thefts.

Pending clarification of their origin, the items were seized and the man was reported for receiving stolen goods, while the presumption of innocence of the accused remains until a final conviction.
