Iran, Supreme Council: "Italy committed to a negotiated and diplomatic approach"
The meeting that focused on the analysis of the international situation and the effects of the ongoing crisis has concluded.
The meeting of the Supreme Defense Council, convened at the Quirinale by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to analyze the international situation and the effects of the ongoing crisis following the war in Iran and the Middle East, has ended after about two and a half hours.
"In the current context of instability - irresponsibly opened by the Russian aggression against Ukraine - with the progressive tearing apart of peaceful international coexistence, the weakening of multilateral institutions, and numerous violations of international law, Italy is committed to seeking and supporting every effort that brings back to the forefront the negotiated and diplomatic path,” reads the final statement of the meeting.
"The Council, in full respect of Article 11 of the Constitution, expresses strong concern for the multiplying conflicts, particularly in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East, where our vital strategic interests are at stake. Attacks on civilians, of which children are too often victims, as in the case of the Minab school massacre, are always unacceptable.”
Participants in the meeting included the Secretary of the Council Francesco Saverio Garofani; Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni; Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani; Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto; Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi; Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso; Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti; Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council Alfredo Mantovano; Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic Ugo Zampetti; and Chief of Defense Staff Luciano Portolano.
The Supreme Defense Council is one of the main Italian institutional bodies responsible for coordinating policies related to the security and defense of the State. Established by the Constitution and composed of the highest offices of the State and government, this body performs a guiding and consultative function on major strategic choices concerning the Armed Forces and national security.
More than a decision-making body, the Supreme Defense Council represents a high-level forum for discussion within the State. Its main function is to ensure that defense choices are shared and coordinated among the Presidency of the Republic, the government, and military leaders.
In this way, the Council helps maintain a balance between the political, institutional, and military dimensions in decisions regarding the security of the Republic.
