Once again, Sicilian amateur football finds itself in the eye of the storm due to events unrelated to the sport.
At the center of the controversy is the match between Vittoria and Gioiosa (Eccellenza, Group B), suspended after just one minute in a climate of high tension.
Sandro Morgana, president of the Regional Committee LND Sicily, intervened decisively, unequivocally condemning what happened and announcing strict measures.
According to the version provided by the visiting team, Gioiosa, some of their members were physically assaulted in the locker rooms of the “Gianni Cosimo” stadium before the kickoff.
The repercussions on the field were unusual: Gioiosa showed up with only seven players on the roster, and after 60 seconds, an injury reduced the squad to six. At that point, the referee, in accordance with the regulations, declared the match concluded early.
The technical verdict awards the victory to Vittoria by default, but the sporting aspect seems destined to take a back seat to the investigations by judicial and federal authorities.
Morgana reiterated the principles that the League intends to uphold: "We work every day for a calm and respectful football. Competing and winning is only possible in compliance with the rules and respect for opponents: this is the fundamental condition for the true spirit of sport."
The president also assured the prompt forwarding of the documents to the sports judiciary, without excluding reports to the relevant state authorities should criminally relevant aspects be found in the reported assaults.
The decision now rests with the Sports Judge, who is called to evaluate the referee's report and any additional investigations to clarify what occurred in the minutes leading up to the match. If Gioiosa's complaints are substantiated, Vittoria faces particularly heavy sanctions, not limited to a fine, with possible consequences on the club's objective responsibility for safety within its facility.
