Sinner, a hurricane in the desert of Indian Wells: Tien annihilated in 66 minutes. Now the super challenge with Zverev.
Jannik overwhelms the American 6-1, 6-2 and reaches his third semifinal in the California Masters.
In the California desert of Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner overwhelms Learner Tien and reaches his third career semifinal at the BNP Paribas Open.
The world number 2 wraps up the match in 66 minutes with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2, showcasing a geometric, essential, and relentless tennis, capable of neutralizing the wind and high bounce of the California hard court.
The technical gap was evident from the very first exchanges. Sinner imposed a suffocating pace, consistently hammering the backhand corner of the twenty-year-old left-hander from the United States and then hitting him with sudden backhand down-the-line accelerations.
The key was anticipation: feet inside the court, impact on the rise to sterilize Tien's spins and dictate his own trajectories without retreating.
A dominance certified by the excellent performance with the second serve and a first serve that, while not overflowing with power, was impeccable in percentages and effective in opening up the angles.
Yet today's opponent was not to be underestimated. Tien came off a sparkling week, with the elimination of seed Ben Shelton and two match points saved against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, becoming the youngest American to reach the quarterfinals in the desert since Michael Chang in 1992.
Already champion of the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025 and runner-up in Beijing 2025 against Sinner, he represents a solid reality in American tennis. Today, however, he paid the price for the heaviness of the blue player's shots and the energy expended in the previous rounds.
For Sinner, this is his third consecutive semifinal in the tournament, after being stopped by Carlos Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024.
The next obstacle on the way to his first final in Indian Wells will be Alexander Zverev, a regular on the big stages and winner of the 2024 Rome and Paris-Bercy Masters 1000.
Between the two, a high-profile rivalry will be renewed, already culminating in the memorable final of the 2025 Australian Open won by the blue player.
