Andrea Kimi Antonelli makes history: at 19 and a half, he wins the China GP.
With Mercedes: he is the first Italian to triumph in F1 since 2006
Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the Chinese GP, driving the Mercedes.
He is the first Italian to win a race in the World Championship since Giancarlo Fisichella, who won the Malaysian GP on March 19, 2006.
The Bologna native, who is only 19 and a half years old and yesterday became the youngest pole position setter in the history of Formula 1, finished ahead of his teammate George Russell.
“I can’t speak, I’m about to cry. Thank you so much to my team who helped me make this dream come true. I’m really happy, yesterday I said I wanted to bring Italy back to the top and I did it.”
So Kimi Antonelli, in tears, comments on his triumph in the Chinese GP.
“At the beginning I gave too much space to the Ferraris but then I recovered and managed to finish the race even though at the end with that lock-up I risked a heart attack,” added Antonelli, who was not born when Fisichella won the last GP for an Italian.
Lewis Hamilton, with the Ferrari, secured third place in the Chinese GP, ahead of Charles Leclerc.
For the Brit, it is the first podium in a long race since he arrived at Maranello in 2025.
“Good job, keep it up guys,” said Hamilton on the team radio.
Points were also scored by Oliver Bearman (Haas), Pierre Gasly (Alpine F1 Team), Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), Carlos Sainz (Williams), and Franco Colapinto (Alpine).
