The second term of the administration led by Donald Trump registers its first major shake-up at the cabinet level. The President of the United States has removed Kristi Noem from the crucial position of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The move, which marks the first real reshuffle at the top of the government in this new presidential cycle, comes amid a climate of growing controversies and intense investigations that have engulfed the now-former Secretary in recent weeks.

At the center of the political and media storm are two main issues. On one hand, there are heavy rumors – always denied by those directly involved – about an alleged relationship between Noem and her chief advisor, Cory Lewandowski. On the other hand, there is a massive and controversial multimillion-dollar advertising campaign, with an estimated cost of over $220 million. The initiative, which featured the Secretary herself as the star of the ads, was officially aimed at recruiting new officials to bolster the ranks of the Department of Homeland Security.

The management of these funds and the internal decision-making dynamics quickly attracted the attention of the United States Congress. During a tense sworn testimony before a Senate committee, which pressed her on the processes through which the multimillion-dollar funds were allocated, Kristi Noem testified that the promotional campaign had been pre-approved by the President himself. A statement that, according to several sources close to the White House, completely surprised Donald Trump. The tycoon’s denial came swiftly: "I never knew anything about it", Trump stated categorically on Thursday during an interview with Reuters.

Despite the abrupt break in trust regarding the management of the DHS and the evident contradiction over the sworn statements, Noem's exit does not translate into a definitive distancing from the administration's orbit. In a typical move of Trump's communication strategy, the announcement of the change in leadership was accompanied by words of praise. Through a message on his social network, Truth Social, the President thanked Noem for her service at "Homeland", stating that the former Secretary "served us very well and achieved numerous and spectacular results (especially at the border!)."

A new high-profile diplomatic role is already ready for her: she will become Special Envoy for "The Shield of the Americas". This is a new Initiative for Security in the Western Hemisphere, the operational and strategic details of which will be officially revealed by the President next Saturday during a highly anticipated event in Doral, Florida.

Taking the reins of the Department of Homeland Security will be Republican Senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin. "I am pleased to announce that U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin, highly respected for the great State of Oklahoma, will become Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social, setting the official start of his term for March 31, 2026. Mullin will inherit a department currently in the spotlight, tasked with managing complex immigration policies and national security in a highly polarized political phase.
