The Messina-Taormina railway section reopens, but Catania Centrale station remains blocked by scaffolding
The restart after the works for Cyclone Harry; for the Sicilian commuters' committee, critical issues remain
Reopens tomorrow to rail traffic the Messina–Taormina section of the Messina–Catania–Syracuse line, at the end of the extraordinary interventions made necessary by the serious damage caused by cyclone Harry.
Italian Railway Network (RFI) has indeed completed the works according to the schedule, starting the construction sites the day after the emergency to allow the reactivation of the service.
"However, critical issues remain along the Taormina–Catania axis," emphasizes a note from the Sicilian commuters' committee, "conditioned since November 13, 2025 by operational limitations related to the reduced functionality of Catania Centrale station. The restrictions hinder the regular storage of trains and the management of connections.
Since the evening of the fire at the exhibition complex 'Le Ciminiere' on November 12, 2025 to date, approximately 60 trains have been canceled, for over 30 thousand train kilometers, on the connections between Catania-Fontanarossa airport, Giarre-Riposto station, and Taormina-Giardini station.
The block of three tracks at the station is due to the presence of a scaffolding leaning against the railway, not yet removed months later: a condition that continues to penalize commuters, students, and tourists and prevents the full restoration of service in the Etna area.
