White smoke, the Pd of Messina chooses Antonella Russo

White smoke from the Pd of Messina: the Pd candidate is Antonella Russo. A lawyer and city councilor, her name received 16 votes in favor and 15 against. This is evidence of a strong divide within the Democratic Party of Messina. A fracture that could have repercussions in the electoral campaign. In the meantime, her name will be brought to the regional table next week, which is expected to simply ratify it. 

After yesterday's uproar, the times for the choice of the mayoral candidate in the center-left had further lengthened. In pole position was Antonella Russo, chosen by the regional secretary, Anthony Barbagallo, favored by part of the local party, but opposed by the faction that would have preferred the candidacy of Alessandro Russo. Both city councilors, they were at the center of a fratricidal dispute within the Messina party. Seriously delayed in choosing the candidate. The electoral campaign has, in fact, already been in full swing for days. A continuous back-and-forth between Marcello Scurria, the center-right candidate, and Cateno De Luca. And it was he, today, trying to take advantage of this impasse, who sent an appeal to the Pd: «We hope that the uncertainty characterizing the center-left will be resolved as soon as possible because we are still in the phase of “waiting for Godot”».

«To the electorate of the center-left – continued De Luca – I clearly say that in light of these delays, the time has come to make a choice of side. Our civic project is open: it has a right wing, a left wing, and a centrist wing. The administrative actions I initiated in 2018 and that Federico Basile has been carrying out since 2022 have all the characteristics of social justice that is often referred to as an identity element of the left».

But Godot, it seems, has arrived.
