Four drones targeted the military base at Baghdad airport, which hosts a U.S. diplomatic mission. Security sources confirmed to Afp: at least two drones crashed inside the facility. The evening incursion highlights the vulnerability of U.S. installations in Iraq.

Raid on Basra

Drones also struck the airport and the oil fields of Basra, according to an Iraqi security source. This double attack risks further destabilizing the local economy, already strained by tensions. The Iraqi authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further escalations.

Macron expresses solidarity with Iraq

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed full solidarity with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani via X. "The stability of Iraq is essential for the region," he added, reiterating support for the country's sovereignty. France and Iraq are strengthening dialogue against involvement in the broader conflict.

Rumors of Qaani's execution

The National newspaper of Abu Dhabi reports that Esmail Qaani, commander of the Iranian Quds Forces, may have been executed by the IRGC on charges of spying for Mossad. The news is based on unconfirmed posts on X: Qaani, successor to Qassem Soleimani who was killed in a U.S. raid in 2020, had survived various assassination attempts. Iran has not officially verified this, fueling speculation.

Regional escalation

These events are part of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last summer, with Qaani often reported dead and then denied. Iraq remains a crossroads for pro-Iranian militias, while Trump, re-elected U.S. president, closely monitors the situation. Vigilance is required to avoid broader involvement.
