Viale Carmine Caruso closed for... landslide
Closure of Viale Carmine Caruso, evacuations, demolitions and compensation for residents and businesses; over 5.3 million for consolidation works and accelerated regional process
The interventions for the safety of the area affected by the landslide are taking place in Motta Sant'Anastasia. These interventions also concern the internal road network of the town, as the landslide continues to manifest slowly but steadily. Thus, less than 24 hours ago, a large part of viale Carmine Caruso was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, which, however, had previously been subject to a limited and partial vehicle traffic restriction with changes to the road network.
"This is an initiative aimed at ensuring the safety of our citizens - explained Mayor Antonio Bellia - an intervention carried out only after the area was cleared. The residents have been relocated and guided towards new alternatives; just as we have done with the commercial activities, we are helping them with compensations and we are paying others."
On this front, the municipal administration specified that a delegation from Motta has once again visited the offices of the Regional Civil Protection Department to expedite the process of obtaining additional resources. "I thank the vice president of the Region, Luca Sammartino, who is following this matter every day - highlighted Mayor Bellia - roads will also be financed to ensure safety and to address the emergency, such as via Giubileo 2000, via Antonino Francaviglia, and via Acqua Nuova."
As specified by the Municipality, the closure of viale Carmine Caruso is one of many necessary and preparatory interventions for the future consolidation works of the red zone, where in recent weeks, to "lighten" the pressure in the area, demolitions of buildings are underway. "The Municipality has paid maximum attention in every aspect - continued the mayor of Motta - the goal is to accelerate the process that allows us to start the consolidation works as soon as possible." Over 5 million three hundred thousand euros have been allocated for safety measures. "We are working on the most important public work started in the 1980s and never completed - concluded Bellia - the bidding operations are underway and the regional staff is working tirelessly in collaboration with our offices. In the 1980s, interventions against the landslide were initiated but were never completed."
