On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the Women's Council of Ragusa and the Maria Cristina di Savoia Cultural Conference, in collaboration with the Department of Equal Opportunities of the Municipality of Ragusa, promote an event dedicated to the Founding Mothers.

The initiative is part of the eightieth anniversary of women's suffrage (1946–2026), a decisive step that marked the entry of women into national political life, significantly contributing to the construction of republican democracy.

On March 12, 2026, at 6:00 PM, at the Cultural and Commercial Center of Ragusa, journalist and writer Eliana Di Caro will speak, author of the book The Mothers of the Constitution, dedicated to the twenty-one women who participated in the drafting of the Fundamental Charter of the Italian Republic.

The event aims not only to be a celebration but also an exercise in awareness and civic responsibility.

The twenty-one Founding Mothers, despite coming from different experiences and political alignments, were united by the belief that democracy could not be considered complete without the full recognition of dignity and gender equality.

In their work, themes such as the right to work, the centrality of the family, access to education, protection of the most vulnerable, and equal social dignity emerged strongly: principles that have become pillars of the new Republic.

Remembering this anniversary means emphasizing that the 1946 vote did not represent an arrival, but the beginning of a journey that still today calls women and men to bring constitutional values to life and to pass them on to younger generations.

Remembering the Founding Mothers on the 80th anniversary of women's suffrage – declares Elvira Adamo, the Councilor for Equal Opportunities – means reaffirming strongly that democracy is based on the full and conscious participation of women in public life. Those twenty-one women had the courage to make their mark in history during a difficult time, laying the foundations for rights that we now consider indispensable. Our task, as institutions, is to guard that legacy and translate it into concrete actions: to combat all forms of discrimination, to promote real equal opportunities, to support the autonomy and freedom of women. This event is not just a memory, but a civic commitment: an invitation especially to the new generations to feel like active participants in building a fairer, more inclusive society that respects the dignity of all.”
