This time it should be the right one. In Tremestieri, work has begun on the construction of the breakwater to protect the new commercial port.

The company Bruno Costruzioni is carrying out the land works, awaiting the offshore drilling, which will be conducted with the aid of the barge that arrived a few days ago. Activities continue in an attempt to make up for lost time.

The construction of the protective arm represents one of the most delicate and decisive elements of the entire contract, which is worth 90 million euros. After weeks of controversy, a breakthrough seems finally close. The issue regarding the possible variation remains to be resolved: the expansion project drafted in 2007 classified the port as an emergency work, anticipating a service life of about 50 years.

However, the prospects have changed, and the structure in the Southern area is expected to become strategic for reshaping the future of transportation in the Strait area. Meanwhile, the start of the first works for the breakwater marks a decisive step.

The completion of the Tremestieri port could come to the table of the newly appointed extraordinary commissioner of the Municipality, Piero Mattei. Before resigning, Mayor Basile, at the request of the trade unions, had called a meeting to assess the activities and overcome the critical issues.

The infrastructure is financed by the Port System Authority of the Strait, using resources from the State and the Region. Palazzo Zanca is the contracting authority, while the Government has appointed engineer Francesco Di Sarcina as commissioner. The common goal should be to deliver the structure to the city as soon as possible.

In recent days, the Socialist Party has requested the convening of a service conference aimed at clarifying and quantifying the actual state of the works, the estimated timeline for completion, and the actual willingness to carry out the project, including any variations.

Once the works are completed, Messina will have a new and adequate port facility, with up to five ramps for the docking of ferries that shuttle between Sicily and Calabria. But the timeline has already been disrupted. However, attention on the issue remains high.
