I terrible seconds of the earthquake in Ragalna were captured by a surveillance camera inside the Santa Barbara church. The video - released by the head of the Sicilian regional civil protection Salvo Cocina and provided by the parish - shows the extent of the violence of the quake and the fear experienced by the residents of the areas near the epicenter.
At 7:05 AM the ground shook at just three kilometers deep. Inside the Santa Barbara church, the images show the fall of plaster and stucco from above, preceded by a roar. The material that fell onto the pews could have certainly put the safety of people at risk had there been any present. Fortunately, firefighters found no structural damage in the sacred building. Problems, however, were reported yesterday in two buildings declared uninhabitable, from which families were forced to evacuate.
In total, five families have been displaced, but more may be added as inspections of the buildings affected by the quake continue. Mayor Nino Caruso estimated about 600 reports to be investigated, starting with the permanently inhabited buildings and then moving on to second homes.
