This morning, the community of Annunziata, along with the rest of the city, came together in a silent and composed embrace to give a final farewell to Vincenzo Scamporrino, known to all simply as Vicé. The funeral, held at 11:30 AM at the Maria SS. Annunziata basilica, saw extraordinary participation, a tangible sign of the affection and esteem the city had for him.

The ceremony was co-celebrated by the bishops of Ragusa and Catania, Mons. Giuseppe La Placa and Mons. Luigi Renna, along with Vincenzo's son, Don Sebastiano Scamporrino, assistant pastor at San Giovanni La Punta. It was an intense celebration, marked by moments of deep emotion.

A death that shook the city
Scamporrino, 66, passed away last Thursday at the "Guzzardi" hospital in Vittoria. He managed a gas station, where he was struck by a vehicle last December just steps from the entrance. The accident caused him a severe leg fracture, but no injuries considered fatal. However, a bacterial infection complicated his clinical picture, gradually worsening his condition until the decline in recent days.

The news of his passing spread rapidly, leaving the entire city in shock. Vicé was a familiar presence, a good man, generous, always ready to share a joke and a smile.

The gentle giant of Annunziata
For fifty years, during the Easter procession, his massive and reassuring figure had been the focal point of the statue of the Risen Christ. He guided its movements with natural authority, becoming a reference point for all the bearers and for the community.

His life was intertwined with that of the neighborhood and the city: a manager and sports director of Olympia Comiso, an Avis donor, a friend to many, always available and friendly. One of those people who are part of the human landscape of a community, and whose absence leaves a difficult void to fill.

The community's mourning
In the basilica this morning, the sorrow was palpable. Numerous were the faithful, friends, volunteers, athletes, and parishioners of Annunziata. All united in the memory of a simple and authentic man, who knew how to be loved without fanfare.

Next to the coffin, his wife Patrizia and children Adriana and Sebastiano received the affectionate embrace of the city. An embrace that will continue in the coming days, as the memory of Vicé will remain alive in the stories, gestures, and traditions he helped to preserve.
