Catania, an building in via Plaia has been burning since yesterday: thick cloud of smoke and closed road

Since late last night, several teams from the Provincial Command of the Firefighters of Catania, supported by reinforcement vehicles, have been engaged in the extinguishing of a fire of waste and debris that broke out inside an abandoned building on via Plaia, in the southern area of the city of Catania.

The operations continued throughout the night and are still ongoing with activities for fine extinguishing, cleanup, and securing the area. On site, in addition to numerous water tankers, there is an aerial ladder and earth-moving equipment from the Firefighters, also sent by the nearby command of Enna. To ensure water supply, two tank trucks from the municipal civil protection are present.

For the necessary investigations, personnel from the Local Police and technicians from the ARPA have intervened. No individuals are reported to be involved in the fire. For safety reasons, considering the age of the building and the thick cloud of smoke released, the closure to traffic of the section of via Plaia between piazza Caduti del Mare and the Biscari lighthouse roundabout has been ordered.
