Modica, dedicate a square to the memory of Anna Maria Sammito
The committee raises its voice again during International Women's Day
The archaeologist Anna Maria Sammito
On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the request to name the area in front of the church of San Nicolò, in Modica, after Dr. Anna Maria Sammito, a renowned archaeologist and a central figure in the research and enhancement of the historical-archaeological heritage of the area, is being strongly renewed.
The Committee dedicated to her is the one to relaunch it. For the Committee, it is "a due act".
“The city of Modica - writes the committee - cannot forget the scientific, cultural, and human contribution of a scholar who dedicated her life to the knowledge, protection, and dissemination of the history of our land. Naming that space after Dr. Sammito would mean not only paying tribute to her figure, but also making a clear cultural and civil choice: recognizing the role of women in the construction of knowledge and in the defense of the identity of places.
On the symbolic day dedicated to the rights and value of women, Modica has the opportunity to take a concrete and significant action. A signal of memory, respect, and responsibility towards its own history.
The hope is that the municipal administration will heed this appeal and finally follow up on a proposal that the cultural community feels is just, necessary, and no longer postponable.
