San Giovanni La Punta, bar fight among administrators: Mayor Bellia condemns the 'exasperated climate'
After the verbal clash that required the intervention of the bar owner, the condemnation from the municipal leaders arrives: 'Acts that offend the dignity of the positions we hold.'
San Giovanni La Punta, in the province of Catania, in recent days, customers at a bar witnessed a heated political argument escalate into a near brawl involving members of the local administration.
The dispute, triggered by tensions related to strategies for the upcoming elections, quickly transitioned from a verbal confrontation to physical threats, requiring the intervention of the bar owner to prevent things from getting worse.
The incident has sparked strong controversy over the uninstitutional behavior displayed in public, highlighting a particularly heated electoral climate.
In a statement, Mayor Nino Bellia, his Council, and the President of the Municipal Council condemned the “hot climate”.
"Regarding the recent incident that took place in a public place in our area, which involved two members of the municipal administration, we feel it is our duty to express our deepest regret – the statement reads - incidents of this kind inevitably leave a bitter taste, especially because the reported facts represent an offense to the dignity of the positions we hold and, above all, to the citizens we are called to represent. Our Municipality cannot and must not become a stage for events that have nothing to do with politics. Politics is a noble and complex art: it aims to unite individual aspirations for the common good through passion, responsibility, and vision. It is not merely an administrative technique, but an ethical mission oriented towards justice and the dignity of the person, far removed from a biased, improvised, and divisive politics. Those who hold an institutional position do not cease to be representatives of the citizens once they leave the council chamber. On the contrary, decorum, balance, and respect must guide every action, because we are the first to set an example. For over a year, and in fact for some time in a more insidious way, some municipal administrators have contributed to fueling tensions and divisions in the town square. An attitude that benefits no one: it generates confusion among citizens and increases disaffection towards politics, just as the administration is engaged in carrying out its work in this complex final phase of the term. We all hold a public role and must also accept harsh criticism, even regarding the service disruptions that sometimes occur in the area. What cannot be shared, let alone accepted, are methods and attitudes that descend into harsh and very low-level tones, typical of contexts that should not belong to those called to perform the noble role of local administrator. The hope of this administration is that everyone can develop adequate training, both ethically and professionally, to fulfill such a high moral role, avoiding unnecessary controversies and contributing to restoring a climate of respect and institutional responsibility".
