The Crypt of the Cathedral of Messina Shines Again: New Panels, Photographic Catalog, and Work on the Apse Area
The cultural heritage reopened: volunteers and experts at work to redevelop the apse area and solve the wastewater problem
Soon the furnishings will also arrive. The project for the safety, enhancement, and enjoyment of the crypt of the Cathedral continues. In fact, the expert assessment regarding the supply of "supports for museum exhibition of artifacts, publications and publishing, educational panels and captions" has been carried out, which will serve to enrich the precious jewel of immense historical, artistic, and religious value.
The crypt of the Cathedral became accessible on June 1st of last year after years of closure and restoration work. Specifically, forex panels complete with supporting pedestals and a photo-documentary catalog will be purchased, with a total investment of about 10 thousand euros, with the aim of making the offer even richer for the thousands of visitors that the crypt attracts. There is a growing interest in the Cathedral of Messina, which in recent weeks has also seen the start of an urban and cultural redevelopment intervention of the apse area behind the Cathedral, initiated by the Basilica Authority, led by Monsignor Roberto Romeo and the Puli-Amo Messina association, chaired by Christian Mangano.
An intervention that has seen volunteers engaged in cleaning the area and clearing it of a significant stagnation of wastewater, which has made it impossible to enjoy for several years now. The goal of using the area behind the apse for cultural and community events is one that the Authority hopes to achieve in the coming months, and for which efforts are being made to quickly resolve the issue by evaluating, through the involvement of a series of experts, the possibility of replacing the ancient water drainage channels or at least channeling all wastewater to one of the channels that is still usable today, thus avoiding the risk of flooding.
