Italy leads the multinational group that strengthens NATO's deterrence on the eastern flank
The multinational tactical group completes the live-fire exercise in Koren: national leadership, integration of Balkan partners, logistical autonomy, and deterrence
The Italian-led Multinational Battle Group has successfully completed the first live-fire exercise of the ongoing rotation at the Koren training area, as part of the NATO Forward Land Forces (FLF) operation. Commanded by Colonel Matteo Epifani, the exercise tested rapid deployment, multinational integration, and operational sustainability, strengthening the deterrence posture of the Alliance on the eastern flank.

The exercise in detail
The activity involved over 150 military personnel and more than 40 vehicles, including combat platforms, logistics vehicles, engineering assets, and medical components. The Italian units from the “Garibaldi” and “Pinerolo” Brigades integrated seamlessly with units from the Albanian, Bulgarian, North Macedonian, Montenegrin, and Romanian Armies.
Two tactical convoys departed from the training area of Novo Selo, covering approximately 180 kilometers to the Koren training area. The task force operated in full logistical autonomy for 96 hours, demonstrating the ability to sustain prolonged operations away from the main base in a complex multinational context.
Strategic objectives and results
The exercise tested not only the effectiveness of fire and coordination among units, but also logistical planning, force protection, and long-distance command and control. These elements are essential to ensure NATO's operational readiness in real-world scenarios.
The event confirmed the high level of interoperability achieved among allied forces, highlighting the effectiveness of multinational integration. This success directly contributes to the stability and security of the Balkan and Eastern region, in an increasingly challenging geopolitical landscape.
The key role of Italy in NATO
Under the guidance of Colonel Matteo Epifani, Italy has demonstrated leadership and professionalism of a mixed unit. The “Garibaldi” and “Pinerolo” Brigades have represented a national pride, projecting the capabilities of the Italian Army on an international level.

This FLF rotation emphasizes Italy's commitment to collective defense, with a focus on deterrence on the eastern flank. In a 2026 marked by global tensions, exercises like this prevent escalation and ensure a rapid response to hybrid or conventional threats.
Regional impacts and future prospects
The Koren exercise strengthens trust among allies and the local populations in the Balkans, promoting Euro-Atlantic peace. Upcoming activities will expand the tests, integrating advanced technologies such as drones and cyber defense to adapt to evolving contexts.
Italy continues to lead with excellence, supporting NATO as a pillar of security.
