To ensure urban safety and protection of the territory in Caltanissetta, drones that the municipal police command already possesses will be used. The use of drones was decided by the municipal police command, which considers them "one of the most significant evolutions for the smart city and safety."

Specifically, the drones will be used for the monitoring of large events where managing crowd flows can prevent or determine dangerous situations; for the control of hard-to-reach places; for search and rescue and locating people in urban or abandoned areas using thermal cameras that detect body heat even at night.

The drone, they emphasize at the local police command, can also be useful for combating environmental crimes by identifying illegal dumps, toxic spills, and monitoring building abuses; for fire prevention by monitoring wooded areas to detect potential hotspots and also hydrogeological instability by monitoring landslide-prone slopes. It can also be used for traffic flow monitoring as well as for the technical survey of road accidents thanks to photogrammetry that allows reconstructing the accident scene in 3D in a few minutes, reducing traffic blockage times.

The drones purchased are stored in the warehouses of the municipal police command. But now it is necessary to identify the competent personnel who will have to operate them.

The municipal police command has also thought about this and has established that three members of the same command will manage the drones, to be selected from those who have the appropriate predisposition. The three designated will be sent to the Italian Drone Factory in Serrago, in the province of Milan, where they will attend a specific course for the use of drones and flight operations and obtain the necessary certificates to be able to operate. Meanwhile, the municipal police command has requested the registration required on the D-Flight portal.
