Terna reti the 70s with a maxi-investment of 9 million, hi-tech turning point for Catania
The process for the modernization of the underground connection 'Misterbianco - Villa Bellini' has begun. The new infrastructure with XLPE insulation will allow the decommissioning of obsolete fluid oil cables in the urban center and the demolition of three supports, returning 4 hectares of land to the city.
More modern, efficient, and sustainable electrical grid for the Metropolitan Area of Catania: this is the goal of the new intervention by Terna, the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, which will invest approximately 9 million euros to upgrade the underground power line between the Misterbianco electrical station and the Villa Bellini primary substation.
The Sicilian Region has just initiated the authorization process for the construction of a subterranean connection approximately one kilometer long, located outside the urban area and based on cables with XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation, a more sustainable state-of-the-art technology capable of ensuring greater continuity and reliability of service.

The project will lead to a significant reduction of urban impact and the recovery of areas currently occupied by infrastructure. With the commissioning of the new line, approximately 700 meters of old cables laid in the heart of the city will be removed. Those installations, built in 1977 and active since 1987, use an outdated fluid oil system.
Additionally, the removal of three electrical supports is planned, an operation that will return to the community approximately 4 hectares of land, equivalent to five soccer fields.
This initiative is part of a bigger plan to enhance the Sicilian grid, aimed at improving the power supply to the Acicastello and Catania East substations. The program includes the restructuring of the "Misterbianco – Villa Bellini – Catania Centro" route and the reconstruction of the "Villa Bellini – Catania North" line.
With this investment, Terna — which manages over 4,500 kilometers of high and very high voltage lines and 81 electrical stations on the Island, employing approximately 350 employees — strengthens its role in consolidating and securing the regional electrical system.
As for public information, the company has already published the notice with the list of potentially affected land parcels. Citizens and property owners can view the entire documentation at the offices of the Sicilian Region and the involved municipalities, as well as online through the institutional websites and the public registers. From the date of publication, 30 days are allowed to submit any observations to the Sicilian Region, with a copy sent for information to Terna.
