Stromboli requests to become an autonomous municipality: the application has been submitted to the Sicilian Region.

Promoting Committee for the administrative autonomy of the island of Stromboli has submitted to the Sicilian Region the request to initiate the procedure aimed at the establishment of the autonomous Municipality of Stromboli. The initiative involves the territorial separation from the current Municipality of Lipari and was formally presented by the committee president, Giuseppe Fulco.

The request falls within the framework established by Article 8 of Regional Law No. 30 of 2000, which regulates the procedures for the modification of municipal boundaries and the creation of new local entities.

In support of the request, 244 authenticated signatures of voters residing on the island have been collected, a number that represents about 41% of the local electoral body. The result, the promoters emphasize, is particularly significant given the period during which the collection of signatures took place, between November 1 and December 3, 2025, months when many residents are away from the island for study or work reasons.

According to the committee, the institutional process just initiated arises from the need to ensure a more localized administrative management that is closer to the specificities of the territory. Among the main reasons cited are the presence of the active volcano, the critical issues related to the condition of permanent insularity, and the need to more directly manage the significant tourist flows that affect the island for much of the year.

The request now initiates the process provided for by regional regulations, which will need to evaluate the proposal and the prerequisites for the eventual establishment of the new Municipality.
