Rejection of the third term for mayors, Anci: "Yet another regulatory anomaly"

The rejection of the third term for mayors in Sicily is not well received by the association of municipalities Anci. "We acknowledge that the Sicilian Regional Assembly has once again rejected the provision that would have allowed for the alignment of the rules regarding mayoral terms with those in force at the national level and with the indications repeatedly expressed, in defense of fundamental rights, by the Constitutional Court, most recently with the recent ruling no. 16 of 2026 regarding the regional law of Valle d'Aosta." This was stated by Paolo Amenta and Mario Emanuele Alvano, respectively president and general secretary of Anci Sicilia.

"After what has already occurred during the approval of the law 'Rules concerning local authorities', the outcome of this vote by the Sicilian Regional Parliament leads us to ask a very simple question: is it really beneficial for the territories, and therefore for Sicily, to maintain a special status regarding the organization of local authorities that produces rules in contrast with the national framework and with constitutional jurisprudence? - The leaders of the Sicilian municipalities' association add - Or would it be wiser and more useful to foresee a systematic alignment with the rules approved at the national level, avoiding interpretative conflicts, application uncertainties, and ongoing litigation that ultimately falls back on the municipalities and, in the end, on the interests of the citizens themselves? This - concludes the president of Anci Sicilia - is the question we must have the courage to ask ourselves from now on."
