Bribes at the ASP of Palermo, three arrests: the seizure of 1.2 million in cash from a doctor - VIDEO
House arrests and suspensions: bribes, fake disability pension certificates, and favoritism towards orthopedic companies
A new development in the investigation into bribes at the Asp of Palermo: the Mobile Squad has executed three house arrests against the doctor Giuseppe Nicoletti — already found in possession of 1.2 million euros in cash —, the orthopedic surgeon Leonardo Gaziano, and the entrepreneur Massimiliano Contino. According to investigations coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office, the criminal system provided false certifications for disability pensions without any medical examination and facilitated companies specialized in orthopedic aids through preferential channels and patients directed ad hoc.
From the wiretaps, a picture of widespread corruption has emerged where Gaziano, in addition to cash bribes, allegedly demanded gifts in kind such as fresh fish, oil, and wine to favor the involved businesses. The GIP order also affected other professionals in the Palermo healthcare system, imposing suspensions from employment for one year and reporting obligations for a physiatrist from the hospital "Enrico Albanese", a neuropsychologist from "Buccheri La Ferla", and an entrepreneur from Enna, all accused of having fueled the cycle of false health certifications for compensation.
